Chiefs to sign TE Ricky Seals-Jones

Kansas City Chiefs GM Brett Veach didn’t wait long to use some of the salary cap space that he freed up by restructuring the contract of WR Sammy Watkins.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor, the Chiefs have agreed to terms with former Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals TE Ricky Seals-Jones. Paylor’s report was later confirmed by The Athletic’s Nate Taylor. This is an intriguing signing because Seals-Jones is a move tight end. He’s more of a big receiver than a guy that will be in-line operating as a blocker.

Seals-Jones originally signed with Arizona as an undrafted free agent following the 2017 NFL draft. He played college football for the Texas A&M Aggies.

During the 2019 season, Seals-Jones recorded 14 receptions on 22 targets, amounting to 229 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He was one of the better tight ends for the Browns and one of the few remaining on the free-agent market with solid production as a receiver.

According to the report, Seals-Jones agreed to join on a one-year deal. His contract structure will tell the story. If he gets anything other than the veteran minimum, it’ll tell us that the team has plans for Seals-Jones. Otherwise, he’ll merely be viewed as competitive depth for the offseason.
