The Kansas City Chiefs have signed QB Patrick Mahomes to a long-term contract extension that will keep him in Kansas City through the 2031 season.
According to a new report from ESPN’S Adam Schefter, Mahomes and the Chiefs have reached an agreement on a 10-year contract extension. That’s in addition to the two remaining years Mahomes had on his contract, making it 12 total years of Mahomes in Kansas City. That means Mahomes will be in with the Chiefs until he’s 36 years old, well through the prime of his career.
Such an extension is about as close to a forever contract as you’ll get in the NFL. The last time a quarterback signed a 10-year extension in the NFL was 2004, when Michael Vick signed a 10-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons.
Details are still forthcoming on how much his contract will be worth, but it’s expected to be the richest contract in NFL history according to Schefter.
In his first two seasons as starting quarterback, Mahomes became league MVP and Super Bowl MVP, toppling franchise and NFL records along the way. In his young career, Mahomes has already thrown for 76 touchdown and 9,412 yards. He’s also become the new face of the NFL, leading the league in merchandise sales as one of the most recognizable players in the game.
This contract has Mahomes poised to be with Kansas City wreaking havoc on the NFL for many years to come.
