The Chiefs are the first team to pick up a player from the recently defunct Alliance of American Football.
Keith Reaser of the Orlando Apollos will be headed back to Kansas City. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Reaser is set to sign with the Chiefs following the decision of the AAF to cease operations.
Reaser was originally a member of the Chiefs in 2017. He was signed in September and spent time on their practice squad before being promoted late in the season. Reaser made a strong impact during Week 17’s exhibition game against the Broncos (also Patrick Mahomes’ debut as a starter). He also had one of the top special teams plays for the Chiefs in the 2017 playoffs against the Titans.
Reaser was primed for a role with the Chiefs heading into the 2018 season, but he was injured throughout training camp. His opportunity to stick with Kansas City slipped through his fingers because of the injury and he was released from injured reserve in early September.
When the AAF first kicked off in 2019, Reaser joined the Orlando Apollos. He made the most of his opportunity with the league and instantly became one of the top players. He finished the eight games totaling 12 tackles, 10 passes defended, three interceptions, and two returned for touchdowns.
Don’t expect the Chiefs to hand Reaser a starting opportunity right away, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see him stick with the Chiefs this time around if he manages to stay healthy. At worst he’s a valuable depth piece and special teams player to this team.
