Chiefs to sign free agent CB Morris Claiborne

The Kansas City Chiefs have seemingly brought in some veteran cornerback help.

As first reported by Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor, the Chiefs have agreed to terms with veteran corner Morris Claiborne. Claiborne started his career with the Dallas Cowboys and spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets before becoming a free agent in 2019.

In 2018, Claiborne set career highs in tackles, interceptions and passes defended. He’s coming off the best season of his career and headed to a team that is in need of depth at the cornerback position.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport claims the deal between the Chiefs and Claiborne will be a one-year deal worth up to $1.5 million.

Recently, the NFL announced a four-game suspension for Claiborne, so he won’t be available immediately if he sticks with the Chiefs. It’s one reason he was available this late in the process. He’ll go on the suspended list and won’t count toward the active roster until his suspension is served.

Cornerback is a position that the Chiefs sought to improve for the 2019 season. They were unable to land free agent cornerbacks such as Ronald Darby and Darqueze Dennard, even though they showed interest. During the draft, all of the corners they had been interested in came off the board before they were able to pick on Day 2. Now they’ll look to Claiborne for some veteran assistance as they continue to rebuild their secondary.
