Chiefs to host 6 tryout players at mandatory minicamp

The Kansas City Chiefs kick off their three-day mandatory minicamp today and they’ll have some new faces in the building.

The team has brought on six tryout players during mandatory minicamp, each with a chance to impress and make the Chiefs 90-man offseason roster. Chiefs Reporter BJ Kissel posted the full list of tryout players on social media and there are two familiar faces among them.

Kansas State guard Abdul Beecham and Northwest Missouri State FB Josh Caldwell both participated in the Chiefs’ local pro day. They also both had a tryout with the Chiefs during rookie minicamp. Neither player received an offer to join the Chiefs following rookie minicamp, but clearly the Chiefs like them enough to give them another shot during mandatory minicamp.

The other faces aren’t so familiar, but intriguing nonetheless.

AJ Ouellette is an undrafted free agent running back out of the University of Ohio. He posted a strong senior campaign with over 1,500 scrimmage yards and 14 touchdowns. At 5-10 and 209 pounds he’s a little smaller than Brett Veach’s typical 5-foot-11 220-pound running back.

D’Juan Hines played linebacker for the University of Houston, but went undrafted following the 2018 NFL draft. He’s spent time in the NFL with the Chargers and Browns. He played most of the 2018 season with the Browns, appearing in several games on special teams.

Hamp Cheevers is college football’s reigning interception leader. He played for Boston College in 2018 and recorded seven interceptions on the season. Cheevers’ undrafted status likely has to do with his size. At 5-9 and 170 pounds, he’s considered undersized for the cornerback position.

Dee Delaney is a long and rangy defensive back out of the Citadel and the University of Miami. He went undrafted following the 2018 NFL draft. He spent some time with the Jaguars and the Dolphins since entering the league, but hasn’t been able to hold down a roster spot.

Each of these players has a nice opportunity to make an impression this week as the Chiefs continue to churn the bottom of their roster ahead of training camp.
