The Kansas City Chiefs continue to take care of their own players, this time tendering a contract offer to a former trade acquisition.
According to Kansas City Star beat writer Sam McDowell, the Chiefs have tendered restricted free agent CB Charvarius Ward. Joining the Chiefs via trade ahead of the 2018 NFL season, Ward has been a starting cornerback on Steve Spagnuolo’s defense for the past two seasons. Ward has started a total of 31 games over the past three seasons, recording 155 tackles, two interceptions, 19 passes defended, a sack and three QB hits.
With Bashaud Breeland heading to free agency, bringing back Ward was an essential move by Kansas City. They simply have too many holes to let two starting corners walk.

Ward received a second-round tender which means he’ll be paid $3.384 million in non-guaranteed money for the 2021 NFL season. As a restricted free agent, Ward can be signed to an offer sheet by other teams. They can match the offer. However, with the second-round tender amount, teams would need to give up a second-round draft pick in order to sign him.
This shows you the Chiefs value Ward’s ability and would prefer to keep him around rather than lose him. It also shows you that they like the second-round talent at the cornerback position in the upcoming draft.
