The first week of the 2019 college football season is almost here. With it, our friends over at Draft Wire have a new two-round 2020 mock draft.
They used the latest Super Bowl odds to determine the draft order, and the Chiefs are favored to win it all, so they’d pick last. They’ll also receive pick No. 47 from 49ers as part of the Dee Ford trade and forfeit pick No. 64 to the Seahawks as part of the Frank Clark trade.
With pick No. 32, Draft Wire has the Chiefs selecting running back Travis Ettiene of Clemson. Here’s a look at what Luke Easterling wrote about Ettiene and the Chiefs:
The NFL’s best teams get (and stay) on top by prioritizing talent and value over pure need. The Chiefs get both here in Etienne, who is a mismatch machine on every snap, and a threat to score every time he touches the ball. Adding him to this offense would be just unfair.
I know that fans would be incensed if the Chiefs did not manage to come away with a cornerback in the first round. It’s the most glaring need on the team, but if the Chiefs do happen to win it all, the guy they want might not be available at pick No. 32. If they stay at this spot and Etienne is available, the pick is a no-brainer. Speed, size, power, vision and contact balance — he has it all.
With pick No. 47, the Chiefs select edge rusher Terrell Lewis of Alabama. Lewis didn’t get a writeup from Easterling, so here are my thoughts on the player:
Lewis is in need of a big 2020 season after his sophomore and junior years were cut short due to injury. I like what he brings to the table in terms of athleticism at 6 feet 5 and over 250 pounds. He needs to stay healthy and get a season with some production under his belt — otherwise, he might not be drafted this high.
Overall this would be a solid two rounds for the Chiefs, though I can already see the outrage of Brett Veach’s failure to address the cornerback position. Perhaps winning the Super Bowl would be a solid trade-off.
