After the Houston Texans offensive line didn’t allow a sack in their Week 5 53-32 win over the Atlanta Falcons, next week’s opposition, the Kansas City Chiefs, are ramping up their efforts to help the Texans live down to their reputation.
Spotted by Joshua Brisco of Sports Radio 810, Kanas City’s defensive line is prepping for Houston’s offensive line by placing pictures of linemen Laremy Tunsil, Max Scharping, Nick Martin, Zach Fulton and Tytus Howard on trash cans.
Coincidentally, the Chiefs’ defensive line is a struggling unit. Their 11 sacks are towards the bottom half of the NFL. Kansas City’s 155.8 rushing yards allowed per game is 30th in the NFL.
Kansas City’s newly well-paid edge-rusher Frank Clark hasn’t looked his worth, compiling one sack in five games. Their best defensive player, defensive tackle Chris Jones, who led them in sacks in 2018 (15.5) is out for Sunday with a groin. Defensive tackle Xavier Williams will join him as he nurses an ankle injury.
The Chiefs signed veteran defensive tackle Terrell McClain to help cope with the injuries.
On the other hand, the Texans have allowed 18 sacks on the year. However, the line Kansas City faces on Sunday — the same one shown on the trash cans — have allowed two in two games played together. Deshaun Watson won AFC Player of the Week both times he played behind them.
In all, the Chiefs, with their injuries, and new addition, must shake up their practice methods as they deal with a laundry list of injuries. Perhaps practicing against trash cans can work for them; perhaps not, Sunday, at 12 p.m. CT will tell.
