A day after being released from the practice squad, OT Prince Tega Wanogho is back with the Kansas City Chiefs. This time it’s on a reserve/future contract, though.
According to the NFL’s transaction report, the Chiefs signed Wanogho to a reserve/future deal. The former 2020 sixth-round draft pick by the Philadelphia Eagles had his practice squad contract expire following the conclusion of Philly’s season. Instead of signing back with Philly, he opted to join the Chiefs’ practice squad ahead of their AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills. Now, the 6-5 and 305-pound tackle is guaranteeing himself a chance to compete for a spot on the 2021 53-man roster in Kansas City.
If you’re not familiar with reserve/future contracts, they allow players to sign with teams prior to the beginning of the new league year. That means that Wanogho won’t count toward the Chiefs’ roster until the new league year begins and the 90-man offseason roster is opened for the team.
This is a smart move by the Chiefs as they look to reinforce depth along the offensive line in the future. They have a number of players on expiring contracts and given the constraints of a lessened salary cap due to COVID-19, they’re going to have to hit on some of these types of developmental players.
Wanogho marks the fifth player to sign a reserve/future contract with the Chiefs, joining WR Chad Williams, WR Antonio Callaway, QB Jordan Ta’amu and QB Anthony Gordon. It’s been pretty heavy on the offensive side of the ball so far for Kansas City in the way of reserve/future deals.
