The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed with another one of their own players on a contract extension.
The Chiefs announced that they have signed kicker Harrison Butker to a five-year contract extension. According to multiple reports the extension is worth a total of $20.3 million over those five years. It’s a contract that will make him the NFL’s highest-paid kicker, at least for the time being. It just edges out New Orleans Saints kicker Will Lutz, for the highest-paid contract to a kicker.
Butker was signed to the Chiefs off of the Panthers practice squad during the 2017 season. He’s been extraordinarily consistent since joining the team. He’s made 93-of-97 extra points over the past two seasons with the Chiefs. He’s also made 62-of-69 field goals since joining the team, including a NFL high on field goal attempts in 2017.
Butker also shared a message of excitement to Chiefs Kingdom following his extension with the team.
“Thanks to the organization for their belief in me and thanks to all of Chiefs Kingdom for the love,” Butker wrote. “Excited to be a part of this team for the next six years.”
This deal attaches Butker for the Chiefs for the next six seasons. It gives them some stability at the position that they haven’t quite had since Ryan Succop signed a similar long term extension years ago.
The Chiefs continue to reward some of their most consistent and solid contributors with contract extensions. Butker’s extension follows a one-year deal given to right tackle Mitchell Schwartz just one day ago. Maybe a deal to extend defensive tackle Chris Jones is in the works?
