Former top CFL prospect Justin Senior says he’s signed with Chiefs

The Chiefs have a monopoly on Canadian offensive linemen in the NFL.

Montreal native Justin Senior announced that he’s signed a contract with the Chiefs. He is the third Canadian offensive lineman to join the team, following starting right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and reserve guard Ryan Hunter.

Senior was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL draft. He showed promise during the Seahawks offseason program but was injured before the season and subsequently was released with an injury settlement.

He was also drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League and was the No. 1-ranked CFL prospect in his respective draft class. He spent the entirety of the 2018 season without an NFL team and didn’t play in the CFL during that time either.

Senior played college football at Mississippi State and was a three-year starter at right tackle. During each of those three seasons he was widely regarded as a top offensive tackle in the SEC, though his first two seasons as a starter were markedly better than his last.

Ahead of the 2017 NFL draft the biggest things that Senior had going for him were his athleticism and physical tools. Technique was the one area of concern in his game. Now he’ll be paired with Chiefs offensive line coach Andy Heck, who has emerged as one of the premier developers of NFL offensive line talent. This seems like a low-risk signing with potential for a big reward.

It’s unclear whether this is a free agent deal or reserve/future contract at this time, but that will likely be revealed on the transaction report in the coming days. We’ll update you here as soon as we find out more.

Update:

The Chiefs made the signing official and it is a free agent deal.
