Chiefs sign 4 more players to practice squad

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced the final four additions to their 2019 practice squad.

Yesterday, the Chiefs announced the first six additions to the practice squad, which were all players that were on the 90-man offseason roster. They were also all offensive players, which was a little disconcerting given the Chiefs’ rebuild on the defensive side of the ball.

The new additions announced today are all players that spent the offseason with different teams. They also all happen to be defensive players, including two cornerbacks, so that should give some relief to the folks out there concerned about the Chiefs’ lack of depth at the cornerback position.

Here’s a look at the new players:

Alex Brown most recently spent time with the 49ers, Eagles and Jets this offseason. He signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina State. At 5-11 and 170 pounds he’s a little slight for the NFL but he’s a good candidate to develop. Right now, he’s probably going to play slot corner. He notched seven tackles and two passes defended this preseason for the Jets.

Torry McTyer signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2017. In 2018, he was a lead candidate to start for the Dolphins opposite Xavien Howard. He ended up starting four games at corner for the Dolphins, notching 22 total tackles and three passes defended. At 5-11 and 188 pounds, he’s more NFL-ready than Brown. If I had to bet on a cornerback getting called up to the active roster, this would be the guy.

At 6-5 and 265 pounds, Cameron Malveaux fits what the Chiefs like at the defensive end position. He’s appeared in games for the Dolphins and Cardinals since entering the league in 2017 and he’s notched two sacks on limited opportunities.

Finally, Emmanuel Smith has spent the past season with the Buccaneers as a developmental linebacker after going undrafted in 2018. He’s played in two full preseasons but has never seen any regular-season action. At 6-4 and 240 pounds, he’s definitely got the size for the NFL, likely working at the SAM and MIKE spots for Kansas City.
