Chiefs should try out former Cardinals draft pick Christian Campbell at CB

It’s not exactly a secret that the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to improve their secondary.

It was one of their most dysfunctional units in 2018, and they’ve spent a good portion of this offseason trying to repair it. They weren’t able to address the cornerback spot as thoroughly as they would have liked. Recently, they signed Morris Claiborne, but he’ll miss a fourth of the season due to suspension.

With the Chiefs’ needs at the position, they should take a look at all available free agents. Ahead of final roster cuts, there’s an intriguing free agent cornerback who has hit the market because of an injury suffered early in training camp. Christian Campbell was recently waived from injured reserve by the Saints, making him a free agent.

Campbell was selected by the Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL draft. He was signed to the Saints’ practice squad in October and had stuck with them ever since. Campell took second-team repetitions with the Saints in OTAs and before suffering a hamstring strain that impacted him early on in training camp.

This led to his injury settlement with the team. It isn’t the first time he’s dealt with hamstring issues. He sat out from most combine drills because of a similar hamstring strain. The Chiefs will obviously have to be comfortable with that if they bring him in.

At his pro day, Campbell recorded a 135-inch broad jump and 41-inch vertical jump. He ran in the mid 4.5s for his 40-yard dash and had a 6.77 3-cone time. He stood on his combine bench press, which was 14 repetitions. He has the requisite athleticism to make it in this league.

The Chiefs met with Campbell at the 2018 Senior Bowl and showed some interest during the pre-draft process. It’s entirely possible they could bring him in for a look even with time running short during the preseason.
