The Kansas City Chiefs released their depth chart for Week 5 of the 2019 regular season. This depth chart reflects one new change as of October 1 but will show 54 players on the roster. I’ll explain that below.
Generally speaking, these depth charts give you an idea of where a player is in the pecking order. They’re considered unofficial because they’re assembled by the team’s PR staff and not the coaching staff. Some things may not accurately reflect what happens on game day because of that. However, the PR staff does have access to the teams’ closed practices and wouldn’t purposely mislead with the depth chart.
Let’s take a look at this depth chart and see what we can learn.

Offense
| Pos. | First | Second | Third | Fourth |
| QB | Patrick Mahomes | Matt Moore | ||
| RB | Damien Williams | LeSean McCoy | Darwin Thompson | Darrel Williams |
| FB | Anthony Sherman | |||
| WR | Tyreek Hill | Demarcus Robinson | Byron Pringle | |
| WR | Sammy Watkins | Mecole Hardman | De’Anthony Thomas | |
| TE | Travis Kelce | Blake Bell | Deon Yelder | |
| LT | Eric Fisher | Cameron Erving | Greg Senat | |
| LG | Andrew Wylie | Jeff Allen | ||
| C | Austin Reiter | Nick Allegretti | ||
| RG | Laurent Duvernay-Tardif | Ryan Hunter | ||
| RT | Mitchell Schwartz | Martinas Rankin |
Observations:
- There haven’t been any changes made to the offensive depth chart this week even though at least one change has clearly been made on the field. Darrel Williams is the RB3 over Darwin Thompson right now. Expect this change to come at some point, but it won’t be this week.

Defense
| Pos. | First | Second | Third |
| LDE | Alex Okafor | Emmanuel Ogbah | |
| LDT | Chris Jones | Khalen Saunders | |
| RDT | Derrick Nnadi | Xavier Williams | |
| RDE | Frank Clark | Tanoh Kpassagnon | |
| LB | Anthony Hitchens | Ben Niemann | Reggie Ragland |
| LB | Damien Wilson | Darron Lee | Dorian O’Daniel |
| LCB | Charvarius Ward | Rashad Fenton | Mo Claiborne |
| RCB | Bashaud Breeland | Rashad Fenton | |
| CB | Kendall Fuller | Rashad Fenton | |
| FS | Juan Thornhill | Daniel Sorensen | |
| SS | Tyrann Mathieu | Jordan Lucas | Armani Watts |
Observations:
- Mo Claiborne is officially back from his four-game suspension. The Chiefs have received a roster exemption for Claiborne, meaning they don’t yet need to make a corresponding move to make room for him on the 53-man roster. They will need to do that ahead of the game on Sunday. This gives the team time to prepare, practice and decide how much Claiborne will be able to contribute in his return from suspension.
- While Claiborne is currently third string, don’t expect that to last for too long. The Chiefs will likely seek to ease him in after no football for the past four weeks. Make no mistake, Charvarius Ward is fighting for his job with Claiborne back in the picture.

Special teams
| Pos. | First | Second |
| P | Dustin Colquitt | |
| K | Harrison Butker | Dustin Colquitt |
| KO | Harrison Butker | |
| LS | James Winchester | |
| H | Dustin Colquitt | |
| PR | Tyreek Hill | Mecole Hardman |
| KR | De’Anthony Thomas | Tyreek Hill |
Observations:
- This past week against the Lions they actually had Mecole Hardman, Byron Pringle and De’Anthony Thomas working on kickoffs. However, Thomas was the only player working on punt returns. It continues to show me that the only player they truly have faith in at either position is Thomas. Perhaps that will change when Tyreek Hill returns.
