Chiefs release updated depth chart for Week 4

The Kansas City Chiefs released their depth chart for Week 4 of the 2019 regular season. This depth chart reflects one new change while neglecting some others.

Generally speaking, these depth charts give you an idea of where a player is in the pecking order. They’re considered unofficial because they’re assembled by the team’s PR staff and not the coaching staff. Some things may not accurately reflect what happens on game day because of that. However, the PR staff does have access to the teams’ closed practices and wouldn’t purposely mislead with the depth chart.

Let’s take a look at this depth chart and see what we can learn.

Offense

Pos. First Second Third Fourth
QB Patrick Mahomes Matt Moore
RB Damien Williams LeSean McCoy Darwin Thompson Darrel Williams
FB Anthony Sherman
WR Tyreek Hill Demarcus Robinson Byron Pringle
WR Sammy Watkins Mecole Hardman De’Anthony Thomas
TE Travis Kelce Blake Bell Deon Yelder
LT Eric Fisher Cameron Erving Greg Senat
LG Andrew Wylie Jeff Allen
C Austin Reiter Nick Allegretti
RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Ryan Hunter
RT Mitchell Schwartz Martinas Rankin

Observations:

  • The only official change to this depth chart is that Blake Bell is now TE2. He previously was third behind Deon Yelder, who has only received two snaps on the season. Meanwhile, Bell has consistently seen 40% or more offensive snaps in each game.
  • Damien Williams was out with a knee injury in Week 3. Darrel Williams backed up LeSean McCoy as third-string RB. Andy Reid praised Darrel for his work this offseason, saying that he dropped some weight and put on some good muscle weight. This change is not reflected on the depth chart, which is a reminder that sometimes it takes a few weeks for these changes to truly take.
  • We learned that the offensive depth chart appears to be accurate for now. Jeff Allen filled in for Andrew Wylie on two snaps at LG.

Observations:

  • There are no changes to the defensive depth chart.
  • The Chiefs seem comfortable rotating the defensive line and linebackers into the game as necessary. They do it to either keep guys fresh or based upon opponent personnel.
