The Kansas City Chiefs released their depth chart for Week 3 of the 2019 regular season. This depth chart reflects a change that has been apparent since the beginning of the season. It has two new additions on the offensive side of the ball. It also reflects some new changes on special teams and defense given Tremon Smith’s departure.
Generally speaking, these depth charts give you an idea of where a player is in the pecking order. They’re considered unofficial because they’re assembled by the team’s PR staff and not the coaching staff. Some things may not accurately reflect what happens on game day because of that. However, the PR staff does have access to the teams’ closed practices and wouldn’t purposely mislead with the depth chart.
Let’s take a look at this depth chart and see what we can learn.

Offense
| Pos. | First | Second | Third | Fourth |
| QB | Patrick Mahomes | Matt Moore | ||
| RB | Damien Williams | LeSean McCoy | Darwin Thompson | Darrel Williams |
| FB | Anthony Sherman | |||
| WR | Tyreek Hill | Demarcus Robinson | Byron Pringle | |
| WR | Sammy Watkins | Mecole Hardman | De’Anthony Thomas | |
| TE | Travis Kelce | Deon Yelder | Blake Bell | |
| LT | Eric Fisher | Cameron Erving | Greg Senat | |
| LG | Andrew Wylie | Jeff Allen | ||
| C | Austin Reiter | Nick Allegretti | ||
| RG | Laurent Duvernay-Tardif | Ryan Hunter | ||
| RT | Mitchell Schwartz | Martinas Rankin |
Observations:
- Recently claimed offensive tackle Greg Senat is the Chiefs’ third-string LT behind Cameron Erving. As suspected this casts some doubt on Eric Fisher’s availability moving forward.
- Byron Pringle is on the 53-man roster after being elevated from the practice squad. He’s listed as a No. 3 WR behind Demarcus Robinson.

Defense
| Pos. | First | Second | Third |
| LDE | Alex Okafor | Emmanuel Ogbah | |
| LDT | Chris Jones | Khalen Saunders | |
| RDT | Derrick Nnadi | Xavier Williams | |
| RDE | Frank Clark | Tanoh Kpassagnon | |
| LB | Anthony Hitchens | Ben Niemann | Reggie Ragland |
| LB | Damien Wilson | Darron Lee | Dorian O’Daniel |
| LCB | Charvarius Ward | Rashad Fenton | |
| RCB | Bashaud Breeland | Rashad Fenton | |
| CB | Kendall Fuller | Rashad Fenton | |
| FS | Juan Thornhill | Daniel Sorensen | |
| SS | Tyrann Mathieu | Jordan Lucas | Armani Watts |
Observations:
- After being inactive for two consecutive weeks Reggie Ragland has been moved to third-string linebacker. Ben Niemann saw some snaps in a 4-2-5 nickel package for the Chiefs which also had Daniel Sorensen playing linebacker.
- Juan Thornhill has been the starting free safety since Week 1 for the Chiefs. The latest iteration of the depth chart is the first to reflect that move.
- Who needs cornerbacks anyways? The Chiefs parted ways with a do-everything athlete in Tremon Smith. That leaves just four cornerbacks on the active roster with rookie CB Rashad Fenton backing up all three spots. Technically they can slide Tyrann Mathieu into CB spots as necessary. They’re two injuries away from having to play a safety out of position.
- The Chiefs waived Joey Ivie to make room for Greg Senat. That means that Khalen Saunders could see his first regular-season snaps this week against the Baltimore Ravens.

Special teams
| Pos. | First | Second |
| P | Dustin Colquitt | |
| K | Harrison Butker | Dustin Colquitt |
| KO | Harrison Butker | |
| LS | James Winchester | |
| H | Dustin Colquitt | |
| PR | Tyreek Hill | Mecole Hardman |
| KR | De’Anthony Thomas | Tyreek Hill |
Observations:
- De’Anthony Thomas is listed as the No. 1 kick returner. This isn’t entirely accurate as Mecole Hardman opened up as the No. 1 kick returner against the Raiders. Thomas, instead, opened up as the No. 1 punt returner. I imagine the Chiefs are pretty flexible here.
