A surprising roster move from the Kansas City Chiefs came in on Monday following their AFC Championship Game victory over the Buffalo Bills.
The Chiefs released OT Prince Tega Wanogho from the practice squad per the NFL’s official transaction wire. The former Philadelphia Eagles sixth-round had signed to the practice squad just a week ago. The timing of this move is perhaps the strangest part, as it comes a day after starting LT Eric Fisher suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.
Wanogho was expected to be someone that could perhaps contribute in the future for Kansas City. He was a highly-touted player coming out of Auburn, but a knee injury flagged at the Senior Bowl saw his draft stock plummet. It’s still possible that Wanogho returns on a reserve/future contract, but it’s unclear if that’s the plan at this time.
As for what the Chiefs might do with Wanogho’s spot on the practice squad, it’s possible that they intend to bring in a veteran player along the offensive line. The team recently worked out former Seahawks OL Justin Britt, who has started games at right tackle, left guard and center during his six-year NFL career. That’d be a valuable player to have in the event the team suffers another injury along the offensive line in the practice week leading up to the game.
For the time being, Kansas City hasn’t made a corresponding move on the practice squad, but expect one to happen in the coming days.
