Chiefs RB Damien Williams is quite efficient at earning first downs

Do you need more proof that Damien Williams has what it takes to be the Chiefs’ lead running back?

If you take a deep dive into his 2018 numbers to end the season you’ll find some really interesting things. For instance, Williams was one of the most efficient running backs in the NFL when it came to picking up a first down. According to Pro Football Focus, Williams had 0.30 rushing first downs per carry in 2018.

Only two running backs had more than Williams on a minimum of 50 rushing attempts. Both those running backs, Kenneth Dixon and Aaron Jones saw more carries than Williams. While Williams only saw 50 regular season carries, Jones saw 133 and Dixon saw 60 carries.

There are plenty of non-believers out there doubting the ability of Williams, but he did some special things for the Chiefs to close out the 2018 season. This is just another one of those things to add to the list.

If Williams is healthy, he should undoubtedly be the Chiefs top option carrying the football in 2019. His success should also allow the Chiefs the luxury of not forcing themselves to draft a running back early in the 2019 NFL draft.
