Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes practices for second consecutive day

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is at practice today for the second time this week.

Today is a week since Mahomes’ kneecap dislocation against the Denver Broncos in Week 7. After practicing in a limited capacity on Wednesday, Mahomes is back at it again. By a few accounts, he appears to be moving around out there better than he did during his first day back.

According to ESPN’s Adam Teicher, Mahomes took No. 2 repetitions during individual drills today. The offense was practicing handoffs during this specific portion of practice. During practice Wednesday, Mahomes was last in line for repetitions behind Matt Moore, Kyle Shurmur and Chad Henne.

We won’t know Mahomes’ official practice participation until after practice has concluded. For now, it’s safe to assume he’ll be listed as limited. At the very least we’ll know that he’s participated in warmups ahead of practice and into the individual portion.

The Chiefs are at least trying to see how Mahomes handles more work in practice by giving him the No. 2 repetitions in the individual portion. The fact that he’s getting repetitions ahead of Kyle Shurmur suggests that Mahomes could have some sort of availability on Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers.

Kansas City Star reporter Sam Mellinger attempted to get offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy to clarify which quarterback was getting first-team repetitions during his press conference today. Bieniemy deferred to head coach Andy Reid.

“I’ll have Coach clear that up with you guys tomorrow,” Bieniemy said. “My name is Eric Bieniemy — the offensive coordinator. Andy Reid is head coach, so he has 51% (of the vote). I’m sure he’ll clear everything up.”

Until Reid gets in front of the media on Friday, it’s unlikely that we get much clarity about Mahomes’ true status. Even then, Reid might chalk Mahomes up to a game-time decision.
