Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes named top AFC Offensive Player for September

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has won AFC Offensive Player of the Month honors for September.

This is the second consecutive season that Mahomes has taken home the award in the month of September, proving that he picked up right where he left off after his MVP campaign in 2018.

Mahomes passed for over 1,500 yards with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions in September, leading the Chiefs to a 4-0 start. He is the NFL’s leader in passer rating, just as he was last season at this time with a 120.4 rating. It might not be the same numbers he recorded just a season ago, but they’re still incredibly impressive, especially when you consider the adversity he’s faced.

The Chiefs had three of their first four games on the road. Mahomes also dealt with an ankle injury that he battled through over the past several weeks. The Chiefs lost three offensive starters to injury during the month: Tyreek Hill, Damien Williams and Eric Fisher.

As October begins, Mahomes is still on pace to throw for more than 6,000 yards on the season. That’d break Peyton Manning’s single-season record by more than 500 yards. If Mahomes keeps up this pace, this probably won’t be the last monthly honor he sees during the course of the season.

The defensive winner for September in the AFC is Devin McCourty of the New England Patriots. Mahomes and McCourty will face each other in Week 14.
