Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is only through Week 1 of the 2019 season and he’s already making an impact on the NFL record books.
In his first game of the season, he put up 378 passing yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars and their vaunted defense. This brought his career total to 5,759 passing yards. That number is good for the most in NFL history through the first 20 games to start a career. It surpasses Kurt Warner, who previously held the record through 20 games at 5,613 passing yards.
The thing that makes this number so impressive is that Mahomes still has two more games to go before he reaches 20 games. He’s only made 18 regular-season starts thus far in his career.
He’ll have a chance to pad his lead on this record over the next two games. The Chiefs face the Oakland Raiders in Week 2 on the road and then head back to Arrowhead Stadium for their home opener against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3.
This isn’t the only record he’ll be able to clutch from the grasps of Warner, though. Mahomes has eight games in those first 18 starts with 300 or more passing yards and three or more touchdown passes. Warner currently nine games of that kind through his first 20 starts, which is good for the most in NFL history.
If Mahomes can throw for at least 300 yards and three or more touchdown passes in either game over the next two weeks, he’ll surpass Warner on that record too. It’s beginning to look like another record-setting season is ahead for Mahomes.
