Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has been the star of the 2019 NFL season. He’s drawn the awe of fans, pundits and apparently other players. In addition to being named to the 2020 Pro Bowl roster, Jackson has earned high praise from his peers after beating them including some calling him the MVP.
But it’s one thing for a player or coach to give Jackson praise publicly in front of a podium. It’s another for a player to try and emulate what Jackson has done on the field.
That’s precisely what Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes did against the Denver Broncos in Week 15. Mahomes avoided a sack, giving the slightest little juke to one side to see a would-be tackler whiff. When back on the sideline, Mahomes asked his teammates if he looked like Jackson on the play.
It seems like a foregone conclusion Jackson is going to win the NFL’s MVP award this season. He leads the league in passing touchdowns, is ninth in rushing yards with the best average per carry and has been breaking records all season long, including Michael Vick’s single-season rushing record.
But for another MVP candidate in Mahomes to be in enough awe to hope he could look like Jackson for a play is pretty cool. Mahomes won the NFL’s MVP award last season and looks to be one of a few bright young stars at the position for the next generation.
Given that both Baltimore and Kansas City will be in the postseason, we could see a Jackson-Mahomes rematch. Hopefully there Mahomes won’t be able to quite simulate what Jackson has done on the field this season.
