Chiefs place LB Darius Harris on non-football injury list, release TE Neal Sterling

The Kansas City Chiefs made two roster moves today, which frees a roster spot ahead of Friday’s veteran report day at training camp.

According to the NFL’s transaction report, the Chiefs placed LB Darius Harris on the non-football injury list and released vested veteran TE Neal Sterling.

Harris is dealing with a shoulder injury and joins defensive teammate Tim Ward on the non-football injury list. Harris will count toward the active roster, which means that he can return to practice at any given time. That means there’s some possibility that Harris could be ready to return ahead of the start of the season. Even if he isn’t ready to return the Chiefs appear to be committed to keeping him through his injury. For more on what Harris is dealing with, click here.

The Chiefs brought in Sterling in late June as they dealt with some injuries at the tight end position. The start of training camp saw the return of both Travis Kelce and Deon Yelder, so the injuries woes are no longer impacting that position. Now that they’re healthier there, Sterling became expendable as the Chiefs seek to strengthen other positions of need. As a vested veteran, Sterling is free to sign with any team, and a return to the Jets could be plausible for him as they deal with injury and suspension at the TE position.

Look for the Chiefs to bring in a few tryout players over the next couple of days in hopes of filling the open roster spot. It was recently reported that the Chiefs were in talks to acquire Mike Daniels in trade before he was released by the Packers. Watch his status closely over the next few days. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach could potentially be talking trade with other teams ahead of training camp as well.
