Chiefs place DT Xavier Williams on IR, announce signings

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that they’ll send one of the players injured in Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts to injured reserve.

Defensive tackle Xavier Williams suffered a high ankle sprain, and an MRI on Monday revealed it to be a particularly bad one. With Williams expected to miss several weeks, the Chiefs have opted to place him on IR in order to free up a roster spot.

In addition, the Chiefs also officially announced the signing of two new players and the waiving of another. Veteran DT Terrell McClain and veteran OL Stefen Wisniewski, as previously reported, will both join the Chiefs. Second-year OL Ryan Hunter has been waived.

Take a look:

With several walking wounded already on the roster and few players on IR, the Chiefs really didn’t have much of a choice but to place Williams on IR. Players on injured reserve are eligible to begin practicing and return after being on the list for eight weeks. Even if Williams is ready to play before eight weeks have passed, the Chiefs need the roster spot to field a healthy defensive rotation.

As for the Stefen Wisniewski-for-Ryan Hunter swap, well, it was obvious the Chiefs needed a veteran presence on the offensive line in the absence of Andrew Wylie. Hunter was simply too green and struggled in his debut. It’ll help both Austin Reiter and Cameron Erving to have the experienced Wisniewski in the mix.
