Chiefs OL Andrew Wylie signs restricted free agent contract tender

Kansas City Chiefs G Andrew Wylie has officially signed his restricted free agent tender.

Wylie was tendered a contract offer with the Chiefs back in mid-March ahead of the 2021 free agency period. According to the NFL’s official transaction report, Wylie has signed his restricted free agent contract tender. The tender is an original round tender, which means that Wylie will earn a $2.133 million non-guaranteed salary for the 2021 NFL season.

Wylie first signed with the Chiefs as a free agent in 2018 and has since become a reliable and valuable depth player for the team. He’s started a total of 35 games at three different positions over the past three seasons for Kansas City. Wylie was also the team’s top earner in performance-based pay during the 2020 season, largely due to the number of snaps that he played for the team.

Despite the value that Wylie has shown in the past, he’ll have to make an extra-strong case to make the roster in 2021. The guard position is perhaps the most competitive in Kansas City with the return of Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and the additions of players like Joe Thuney, Kyle Long, Austin Blythe, Trey Smith. There are others like Nick Allegretti and Yasir Durant, who could also be in the mix for key reserve spots.

Wylie can still be released or traded without impacting the salary cap and that can’t be said about some of the other players on the team. Having a lot of depth can never hurt, but we’ll see how things turn out for the veteran guard during offseason workouts.
