Chiefs officially announce signing of LB Damien Wilson

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to formally announce their free agent acquisitions on Thursday afternoon.

They started with an official announcement on Tyrann Mathieu. Now they’ve announced that former Cowboys LB Damien Wilson will join the team. A former reserve linebacker with the Cowboys, Wilson, is due for a starting role as the strong side linebacker in the Chiefs’ base 4-3 defense.

Brett Veach had these comments to say about Wilson in the Chiefs’ press release:

“We see a lot of potential in Damien,” Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach said. “He was a really good player in Dallas, and as we go through this transition with our defense we were in the market for a young, SAM linebacker. We feel really good about Damien and are excited to have him here in Kansas City.”

This may not seem like a flashy or glamorous move, but sometimes signing overlooked role players can turn into the most important signings of a free agent class. Just look at how Patriots HC and GM Bill Belichick has done things for the past several years. He’ll take a player that has been underappreciated or misused and turn him into a major contributor.

That appears to be the goal and expectation for the Chiefs with Wilson. He’s been a highly productive player since his college days at Minnesota, and he brings some much needed speed to the Chiefs’ linebacker group.
