Chiefs, NFL distancing from Tyreek Hill until DCF inquiry concludes

In the middle of March it was revealed that Police and the Kansas Department for Families and Children were investigating alleged reports of child abuse, neglect, and battery at the home of Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill. It’s been twelve days since we’ve learned of the initial reports, and thus far nothing more has been revealed of the investigation.

Neither the NFL or the Chiefs are willing to make a determination on Hill until law enforcement and Kansas DCF completes their inquiry into this matter. It’s quite different from that of the response surrounding Kareem Hunt’s situation during the 2018 season, but facts emerged rather quickly in that scenario.

While there haven’t been any developments in the investigation released to the public, there are a few new insights that have become apparent recently. For instance, the NFL hasn’t begun it’s own investigation into Hill, and won’t until local authorities finish their investigation per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

At the NFL owners meetings, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid explained that he hadn’t spoken with Hill under the advice of the Chiefs’ legal counsel. If Hill revealed anything to coach, he could potentially be questioned as part of any investigation. That’s something the team likely wants to avoid and beyond just coach Reid.

Additionally, given the NFL’s strict policy regarding player and coach interaction during the offseason, it isn’t a huge surprise that Reid hasn’t reached out. The last thing they want to do is be penalized for braking the NFL’s offseason guidelines.

Brett Veach also spoke on the situation at the NFL owners meetings.

“We don’t have the whole grasp of it yet,” Veach explained “We’re still working through it. We just don’t have all the information right now. Once we do, we’ll be able to make a decision that’s in the best interest of the organization.”

Right now it seems both the Chiefs and the NFL are comfortable and confident in the local authorities ability to gather and best present the facts. Once everyone has all of the facts they’ll proceed with any decisions that need to be made regarding Hill.
