Chiefs LB coach Matt House leaving after 2021 season to become LSU’s defensive coordinator

The Kansas City Chiefs will find themselves looking for a new linebacker’s coach at the conclusion of the 2021 postseason.

LSU was reported to have an interest in Chiefs LB coach Matt House for their defensive coordinator vacancy. On Tuesday, LSU announced that House would be named their defensive coordinator at the conclusion of the NFL season.

House, now is in his third season with the Chiefs as their linebacker coach, first joined the team in 2019 under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. He had worked under Spagnuolo previously as a defensive quality control coach with the St. Louis Rams from 2009-2011. He’s been crucial in developing the linebacker group in Kansas City, mentoring the likes of second-year LB Willie Gay Jr. and rookie LB Nick Bolton.

House returns to the college coaching ranks after having spent three seasons with Kentucky, including two as defensive coordinator (2016-2018). He’s also been a defensive coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh (2013-2014) and Florida International (2015).

Needless to say, at least one Chiefs player gave House a huge vote of confidence in his new gig.

“I’m excited for coach House and all of tiger nation,” Chiefs DB Tyrann Mathieu wrote on Twitter. “This man loves football & teaching! One of the best I’ve been around. This tiger defense will be well coached from day one! Let’s all buy in!!! FOREVER LSU!”

The Chiefs will have some in-house options for replacements for House. That group includes outside linebackers coach Ken Flajole, defensive quality control coach Alex Whittingham and assistant defensive line coach Terry Bradden.
