Chiefs injury, absence updates from OTAs

The Kansas City Chiefs appear to be relatively healthy through the first session of organized team activities.

There are two players who weren’t at practice that were expected absences. Tyreek Hill is still suspended from team activities and was not present at practice in any capacity, and don’t expect that to change anytime soon.

Defensive tackle Chris Jones has been confirmed as absent from OTAs, but NFL Network’s James Palmer says that both sides still expect a deal on a contract extension to get done. There’s no timeline on it, but they are still working towards it.

KC Star reporter Brooke Pryor said early in practice that she didn’t see Travis Kelce out there. This was expected as he recovers from offseason ankle surgery. Kelce eventually made his way out to practice wearing a sweatshirt and hat.

There were two new absences that hadn’t previously been reported, but only one of those absences was injury related.

Linebacker Anthony Hitchens was missing at OTAs because his wife recently gave birth to their child. Expect him to be back in action by the next group of OTAs.

Finally, offensive guard Cameron Erving had offseason shoulder surgery. This is the first time that we had heard of this injury. It explains why Andrew Wylie had been spotted in the starting lineup at the left guard position.

This a pretty good sign early on in phase three of the offseason program. There are really only two injuries through the first group of OTAs, and they are both injuries that appear to be carryover from the 2018 season.
