Chiefs hosting Panthers free agent LB Jermaine Carter Jr. on a visit

The Kansas City Chiefs are hosting an intriguing free agent linebacker for a visit.

Former Carolina Panthers LB Jermaine Carter Jr. is heading to Kansas City for a visit according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Carter is a player that the Chiefs have been interested in since his days playing for the Maryland Terrapins. He was one of the players the team hosted on a top-30 visit ahead of the 2018 NFL draft.

The Panthers ended up drafting Carter in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft and he’s played there for the past four seasons. Carter has appeared in 30 career NFL games, but he’s never made a start. Last season in Carolina, Carter had 88 total tackles, three tackles for loss, one pass defended and one fumble recovery in 17 games played. Carter played WILL linebacker and played in the Panthers’ nickel and big nickel looks. That means the Chiefs could view him as a replacement for LB Ben Niemann who remains a free agent.

The Chiefs aren’t the only team in the running for Carter’s services, with multiple teams reportedly showing interest as of March 22. If they’re going to want to land his services, it’d be wise to close the deal once he’s in town.
