Chiefs host QB Chris Oladokun for visit, WR Jaquarri Roberson for tryout

The Kansas City Chiefs got a jump start on doing some background research on some potential practice squad players.

According to the NFL’s official personnel notice on Tuesday, the Chiefs hosted QB Chris Oladokun on a visit and WR Jaquarri Roberson on a tryout. If those names sound familiar, it’s because they’re two of the players the team hosted on top-30 visits ahead of the 2022 NFL draft.

The difference between a visit and a tryout is simple. Players who come on visits tour team facilities and meet with staff members, but don’t participate in football activities. Tryouts include a bit of everything, but most importantly football-related activities.

Oladokun was a prospect out of South Dakota State with a reputation as a dual-threat passer. He impressed so much that the Pittsburgh Steelers took a flyer on him in the seventh round hoping he’d play a part in their post-Ben Roethlisberger future. Oladokun was released on Aug. 23 in the Wave 2 roster cuts for the Steelers. He didn’t even get a chance to play in the preseason with Mason Rudolph, Kenny Pickett and Mitch Trubisky deadlocked in competition through the first two games.

As for Roberson, he was one of the most productive receivers in college football over the past two seasons as the go-to option in Wake Forest’s offense. He was outplayed during the preseason by other receivers on the Cowboys roster and they too let him loose during Wave 2 roster cuts. He didn’t catch a single pass during the preseason, but he did have one tackle on special teams.

Why is Kansas City looking at both of these players? Well, they clearly had a pre-draft interest in both. Specifically, with Oladokun, he brings a dual-threat option to the scout team that none of the Chiefs’ other quarterbacks do. With Kyler Murray on deck for Week 1, they might be looking for that specific type of skill set for the practice squad.
