Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke about staying focused during opening night festivities

The new NFL season begins at Arrowhead Stadium, with the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Detroit Lions on Thursday night. A final celebration of last season’s Super Bowl victory will begin the festivities, but it will be all business once play gets underway.

The distractions of all the attention surrounding the first NFL regular season game is something the Chiefs head coach has learned over the years to block out. Reid is in his 25th season as an NFL head coach and has all the experience and confidence to prepare his team mentally for the grind. He spoke with reporters on Sunday as the team practiced at the facility.

“The guys are focused in on the Lions,” Reid explained. “All the other stuff, you know, is how it is. I mean, it’s it’s always gonna be an exciting environment. But right now, we’ve got to make sure we were not looking at all that stuff. And we’re looking at the lions they get they get your attention when you watch the tape.”

“It’s great to get the season going, is what it is. I mean, that’s, that’s where you get excited. You understand it’s a long season, but you’re focused on every game, and you maximize yourself every game. So this one against the Lions, and you’re dug in, and crank on that. But the important thing to the player, especially the new guys, young guys, is that it’s faster than what we just had. It’s not it’s not preseason. So, the tempo obviously ramps up another notch.”

Reid is an impressive 9-1 in opening season games with the Chiefs, and his lone defeat came in 2014 against the Tennessee Titans. The Chiefs hope to keep Reid’s winning streak going as they look to make a statement early in 2023.
