Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides injury updates after win over Steelers

The Kansas City Chiefs escaped their Week 16 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers with just a pair of injuries, but both come to key players.

Andy Reid spoke to the media after the game providing his usual update on injured players to start his press conference. He began speaking on starting RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who suffered a collarbone injury during the course of the game.

“Really, there are just the two injuries,” Reid told reporters. “(They) are Clyde (Edwards-Helaire), who hurt his shoulder. We’ll just see how bad it is tomorrow.”

Edwards-Helaire landed hard on his collarbone and held it rather awkwardly as he left the field to go to the locker room. He was ruled questionable to return initially before he was eventually ruled out. According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, X-Rays came back negative, but he’s still scheduled for an MRI tomorrow to determine the severity of the injury.

“And then the Badger (Tyrann Mathieu) had the knee contusion,” Reid said. ” Or a quad contusion, so he came out too at the end there.”

Mathieu banged his quad area on his fumble recovery early on in the game and got up rather gingerly. Later in the game, he banged the same area again when making a tackle and was pictured hopping around on the field before coming off briefly. He went to the bench and was seen smiling and laughing before returning to the field after taking just two plays off.

When Andy Reid began to pull players from the field during the fourth quarter, he pulled Mathieu. He was announced out with a quad contusion shortly after, but it seems like he was just pulled as a precautionary measure. Remember, Mathieu had an issue with his knee earlier this season where an old injury caused it to swell up ahead of the Cowboys game. Needless to say, it’ll take a lot to keep the team’s defensive leader from the field.

We’ll keep you posted on any further injury developments tomorrow.
