Chiefs free agent S Tyrann Mathieu taking visit with Saints

Kansas City Chiefs S Tyrann Mathieu remains one of the best free agents on the market and he’s finally taking a visit.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Mathieu is set to visit the New Orleans Saints. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, the Saints always made sense as a destination. Mathieu recently told WAFB-TV that it “would be great to represent my city and state” by playing for the Saints. Now it seems he could actually be getting that chance.

Mathieu has recently been in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, visiting his alma mater at Louisiana State University. He didn’t just speak to the current group of LSU football players while he was there, but he also threw out the first pitch at the Tigers baseball game against Louisiana-Monroe. Now his Louisiana trip is extending back home to New Orleans, and while Rapoport reports nothing is imminent between the two sides, there is clear mutual interest here.

There hasn’t been a lot of traction surrounding Tyrann Mathieu’s free agent market this offseason, but reports have indicated that he was willing to take his time to find the right situation. That situation was always unlikely to be a return to Kansas City after the team failed to even offer him a contract ahead of the onset of the free agency period.
