Chiefs’ Eric Bieniemy Reflects on Losing Out on Head Coaching Jobs

Eric Bieniemy has been the Chiefs offensive coordinator for the past five years, but it hasn’t yet led to a head coaching opportunity elsewhere. That is despite five straight AFC championship game appearances and playing a part in developing quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

On Monday night, Bieniemy explained that even though he’s interviewed for over a dozen head coach openings in the past five years, he is still enjoying his current run with Kansas City.

“Well, when you’re playing in the Super Bowl, it’s an outstanding feeling,” Bienemy said, via ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss. “So, that’s the only feeling that I know. And, you got to understand, I interviewed this year with the Indianapolis Colts. Last year, I interviewed with the Saints after the AFC championship game. And so it’s unfortunate that things haven't quite worked its way out, but think about this: I’m going to my third Super Bowl in the past four years. Who wouldn’t want that?"

This year, Bieniemy has interviewed just for the Indianapolis job, but he doesn’t appear to be a finalist for the job. Other teams have been rumored to have interest in Bieniemy for their offensive coordinator job if he decides to move on from Kansas City after the Super Bowl.

Just because Beiniemy hasn’t become a head coach yet doesn’t mean he doesn't deserve to at some point. Mahomes said that Bieniemy has done more than enough to earn the chance to lead a team.

“It’s so past deserved, man,” Mahomes said. “He’s done everything the right way. He’s been a part of this offense and this team for so long, holds everybody accountable, is creative in making up plays for us, and I don’t know why he hasn’t been hired.”
