Chiefs engaged in talks regarding contract extension for Chris Jones

One member of the Chiefs defense could be looking at a payday soon.

Back in January NFL Network reported that the Chiefs sought to extend both Tyreek Hill and Chris Jones. While extension talks with Hill have likely been placed on hold, the Chiefs have maintained steady contact with Jones’ representation regarding an extension.

At the NFL owners meeting Chiefs general manager Brett Veach confirmed that Jones and the Chiefs have spoken about an extension on multiple occasions.

“There’s a lot of time to go before the season starts, and he’s certainly a guy that we’ve targeted and would love to get done,” Chiefs general manager Veach said via Brooke Pryor of the KC Star. “The conversations have started.

“I wouldn’t say they are heating up at a rapid pace, but you’ve got to start somewhere. We’ve had two to three of these conversations and they’re getting better.”

It’s good that the Chiefs and Jones are gaining ground when it comes to a contract extension. Ideally they’d lock up either Jones or Hill before the 2019 season is over. Then the franchise tag will be in play for whichever player they’re unable to extend beforehand. With the uncertainty surrounding Hill it looks like Jones will be the one to get extended by default.

Jones is coming off his best season as a professional with 40 tackles, 15.5 sacks, and 19 tackles for loss. With another season of similar stats a projected contract for Jones could exceed $18 million annually.
