Chiefs drop in USA TODAY’s power rankings after loss to Titans

The Kansas City Chiefs had one of their worst performances of the Andy Reid era against the Tennessee Titans in Week 7, and it shows in USA TODAY’s weekly power rankings.

After holding onto the No. 10 spot the past two weeks, the loss in Tennessee has the Chiefs dropping like a rock thrown in a shallow pond. Frankly, I’m surprised that they didn’t fall further given how poor the performance was across the board from the offense, defense and special teams.

Here’s what Nate Davis had to say this week, honing in on the stretch of play since Super Bowl LV:

“Going back to Super Bowl 55, they’ve been torched for 29.3 points per game while averaging 24.6 and are -12 in turnover differential during that eight-game stretch. Time to get back to fundamentals, fellas.”

As great as their offense has been at times this season, they’re not outscoring opponents. Turnovers and the lack thereof on defense have been a huge problem impacting all phases of the game, including that one. Davis might be onto something when he says they need to go back to work on the fundamentals. It feels like something is fundamentally broken with the way this team is approaching and playing the game right now.

As for the rest of the rankings, a bulk of AFC contenders now hold tiebreakers over the Chiefs. The Tennessee Titans (6), Buffalo Bills (7), Cincinnati Bengals (8), Baltimore Ravens (9), Los Angeles Chargers (10), and Los Vegas Raiders (11) all now rank ahead of Kansas City. The Chiefs are 0-4 against the Titans, Bills, Ravens and Chargers and they’ve still yet to play the Cincinnati and Las Vegas.
