Chiefs don’t select anyone in 2019 NFL supplemental draft

After visiting West Virginia WR Marcus Simms at his pro day workout, the Chiefs came away from the 2019 NFL supplemental draft empty-handed.

The Chiefs did not place a bid on Simms, who they visited with prior to the supplemental draft. It’s not a complete surprise, because the Chiefs were 30th in the supplemental draft order. They also didn’t have a lot of low-round draft capital to work with in 2020, with their lowest pick being a fifth-round selection.

No players were taken until the fifth round when the Cardinals selected Washington State DB Jalen Thompson. He was expected to be the top player taken in the supplemental draft and could potentially be a steal for the Cardinals. The remaining players in the supplemental draft pool went undrafted and became free agents.

It isn’t a bad thing that the Chiefs didn’t end up with a new player in the supplemental draft. It’s better that they keep that draft capital for the future as they build and reinforce the team through the 2020 draft. It looks to be a strong class, especially at the receiver position.

Four players from the supplemental draft will be available as free agents. That means it’s still possible that the Chiefs bring some of those players in for workouts. Last season, after the Chiefs didn’t select anyone in the 2018 supplemental draft, they brought in RB Martayveus Carter for a workout ahead of training camp.

The three names to keep an eye on for the Chiefs as far as workouts go are Simms, former Syracuse LB Shyheim Cullen and former Northland TE Devonaire Clarington.
