The goal for the Kansas City Chiefs from the onset of the 2020 NFL season was to defend their Super Bowl LIV title. “Run it back,” they said. They’re now one win away from achieving that goal.
After defeating the Buffalo Bills 38-24 in a slugfest of an AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs will compete against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV. It’ll be a chance for the team to earn their second consecutive Super Bowl title. An important subplot in the win, the Lamar Hunt Trophy is staying home in Kansas City where it belongs. It’s only the second time in franchise history that the team has secured the namesake trophy of the Chiefs’ founder.
With a win in Super Bowl LV, the Chiefs can become the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the New England Patriots did it in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. They’d be in rarified air, becoming only the eighth team in NFL history to ever win back-to-back Super Bowl titles. They’ll have to take down the last quarterback to achieve the feat, Tom Brady. He’s the winningest quarterback in NFL postseason history with 33 wins, but he’s already lost to Kansas City once this season.
What the Chiefs Kingdom is seeing right now, well, it just doesn’t happen often. We’re all living through the golden age of Chiefs football, folks. So it’s time to sit back and enjoy the ride. Onward to Tampa, Florida where with a little luck and a lot of elbow grease, history will be made again.
