Chiefs debut at No. 2 in USA Today Week 1 power rankings

The last time we updated you on the Chiefs’ standing in USA Today’s power rankings they were trending upwards. They had moved up to No. 4  in Nate Davis’ preseason power rankings after having been No. 8 during the offseason.

Now, following 53-man roster cuts and a new addition to the offense, the Chiefs are continuing to make their push to the top. Here’s a look at what Davis had to say about his No. 2 ranking for the Chiefs as they head into Week 1 to face the Jaguars:

“An offense already teeming with talent now adds Shady McCoy? Could K.C. actually be more explosive than last year’s top-ranked attack? Suddenly seems plausible.”

The upward trend for the Chiefs in Davis’ rankings seems to be focused on the addition of LeSean McCoy. Who would have thought that the addition of a 31-year-old RB would shift things so much in the favor of the Chiefs? Sure, McCoy is still elusive and he has a relationship with the mastermind behind the Chiefs offense in Andy Reid. At what point does adding another weapon become redundant in this offense?

Before this, it seemed like what was holding the Chiefs back in the power rankings was the questions about the new defense under Steve Spagnuolo. They showed some good things during the preseason but it wasn’t exactly a reassurance that things will be dramatically better in 2019. I’m surprised that there was no mention of the secondary, which still has some questions, specifically at CB.

We’ll see what transpires in Week 1 and how that shifts where the Chiefs stand in these rankings moving forward.
