Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo had some recent praise for an underrated defensive acquisition by the team
Spagnuolo recently spoke with Rachel Coltz of Fan Source Network during the Venom Camp in Varese, Italy. The event was sponsored by the local amateur football team Skorpions Varese.
Coltz say down with Spagnuolo for an interview regarding his new post with the Chiefs. Spagnuolo was asked to reveal some of the players that stood out on his new defense during the offseason program thus far.
“Well, a lot of them did actually,” Spagnuolo said. “We brought new players like Frank Clark, Tyrann Mathieu, a couple of new corners in, a couple of DBs, the D-line is great with players like Alex Okafor, who is a real good surprise, so hopefully we can mix and match all of those guys and come up with something good.”
The Chiefs added Okafor in the early waves of free agency and signed him to a 3-year contract worth $17.9 million. He was expected to be a key rotational piece, but now it seems that he might be competing to earn a starting role opposite Frank Clark.
This isn’t the first we’ve heard of Okafor as a stand out player this offseason. He had an interception during mandatory minicamp against Patrick Mahomes that had everyone talking about him as a potential contributor. It seems that he’s also earned the praise and trust of his defensive coordinator, which is a good sign.
Of course, Spagnuolo did follow this with a disclaimer that the Chiefs have yet to put pads on or played any real opponents. So there is still a lot of work to be done and a lot to prove for Okafor and others.
