The Kansas City Chiefs’ division rival Denver Broncos made a trade to improve their defensive secondary. They sent a draft pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for CB A.J. Bouye. The move certainly guarantees that pending free agent CB Chris Harris Jr. won’t be returning to Denver.
While Harris is expected to have a strong free-agent market, it’d seem that his preference is to sign with the reigning Super Bowl champions. In mid-February, Harris retweeted a video of analyst DeAngelo Hall saying that he predicts Harris will join Kansas City, seeking revenge twice a year against his former team.
The landlord, Tyrann Mathieu, is already hard at work recruiting Harris to the squad.
Now that it’s clear that Harris won’t be back in Denver, the prospect of him joining the Chiefs seems much more realistic. Even if the banter between Harris and Mathieu is friendly and in jest, Kansas City does have needs in the secondary. Add in the draw of playing with the most dominant quarterback in the NFL in Patrick Mahomes, instead of against him, and you might have a winner.
Another thing to keep in mind, Harris played collegiately for the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. He presumably still has ties to the area.
The Chiefs, of course, would need to free up much-needed cap space in order to sign Harris. They’re tight against the cap, especially given reports that they plan to use the franchise tag on DT Chris Jones. They also have plenty of their own free agents getting set to hit the market, so adding Harris might be more difficult than it would seem. In any event, it’s fun to think about the potential match between Harris and Kansas City.
