The Kansas City Chiefs could potentially look to NFL’s supplemental draft to add some late firepower to their team.
There’s been at least one player who has applied for entry into the upcoming supplemental draft. According to Draft Analyst’s Tony Pauline, former West Virginia WR Marcus Simms has thrown his name in the hat for July’s supplemental draft. Simms left the WVU program in April and entered the NCAA transfer portal, but he’s failed to latch on with any teams.
The former Moutaineer caught 46 passes for just under 700 yards and two scores at West Virginia in 2018. He suffered an injury in the final game of the season and did not appear in West Virginia’s bowl game. Simms has given some indication that he wasn’t happy with his role in West Virginia’s offense in 2018.
Pauline claims that scouts gave Simms a sixth round grade, but he also cites character issues as something that could potentially hurt Simms. It’s not clear what those character issues stem from, but if is has to do with his desire for more touches, that can easily be rectified.
Simms is listed at 6-foot and just under 200 pounds. When you turn on his tape you’ll notice that he has speed to separate, which is something you simply can’t teach. He also displays some run after the catch ability and has played as a punt returner on special teams.
If the Chiefs were to add Simms in the supplemental draft, they’d have to forfeit a 2020 draft pick. That could become problematic because the team doesn’t currently have any picks beyond the fifth round in 2020.
There was some expectation that the Chiefs could add cornerback Sam Beal in the 2018 supplemental draft, but they ultimately chose to pass on making a selection. They did work out one supplemental draft entrant after he went undrafted in 2018.
