Chiefs CB Steven Nelson expected to sign with Steelers

It has seemed as though cornerback Steven Nelson wouldn’t be returning to the Chiefs in 2019, and now that looks to be a reality.

Nelson and the Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to a three-year, $25.5 million deal. The deal is not official until the start of the new league year Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT. Nelson record 68 tackles, 20 pass breakups and four interceptions for Kansas City last season.

The Chiefs either felt Nelson wasn’t worth the money he was seeking or he wouldn’t be a fit in new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s defense — or both. Regardless, losing Nelson does create a void at cornerback, which wasn’t exactly a position of strength for K.C. to begin with.

It will be interesting to see how the Chiefs go after the cornerback position this offseason. Will they bring in a veteran or two? Or will they draft and develop some young players?

Kendall Fuller and Chavarius Ward are almost certain to return to the Chiefs’ roster in 2019. Ward played very well down the stretch last season; Fuller, though he had more struggles than expected, was solid overall.
