Chiefs CB Kendall Fuller had surgery on fractured thumb

Kansas City Chiefs head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder spoke on a pair of injured players this morning. While everyone was keyed in on QB Patrick Mahomes, Burkholder began by updating the media on CB Kendall Fuller.

“First, Kendall Fuller fractured his right thumb against Houston,” Burkholder said. “He didn’t play against Denver and he was operated on in Los Angeles on Friday by Dr. Shin. He returned back to Kansas City Sunday and started Rehabilitation.”

It was a brief update on Fuller, but now we know exactly what was going on with him. Given the emergence of Rashad Fenton against the Broncos in Week 7, I don’t expect the Chiefs to hurry Fuller back from this injury. They seem to have enough bodies to manage without Fuller for the time being.

A fractured thumb likely won’t keep Fuller out too long regardless. He could potentially return to action early while wearing a club or a hard cast. It just depends on the exact nature of his procedure and how quickly he’s feeling up to the task. It’s entirely possible that he could be available off the bench in case of an emergency. We’ll just have to see if he gets any sort of practice in this week, perhaps in a limited capacity.
