Chiefs CB D’Montre Wade disqualified after helmet-to-helmet hit

A Kansas City Chiefs player has been ejected from the game after a dangerous helmet-to-helmet hit.

One of the stars of training camp has been second-year CB D’Montre Wade, but he wasn’t one of the stars of the preseason opener. If anything he made a Cincinnati Bengals player see stars with some very unnecessary helmet-to-helmet contact.

Wade’s hit occurred against defenseless Bengals TE Drew Sample, and it drew a penalty flag from the officials. They thought the hit was egregious enough during a preseason game that Wade deserved to take the rest of the night off. Frankly, it was excessive.

It’s definitely not the ideal start for Wade, his roster spot is in more jeopardy than it was a week ago, after the Chiefs signed CB Mo Claiborne to a one-year deal. Claiborne will likely be competing for starting time and Wade had previously been the first man off the bench for the Chiefs in the event of injury.

Hopefully, this will be a valuable lesson-learned for Wade. If he can get back out there next week and his the reset button, he’ll continue to have a chance to compete for that primary backup role in Kansas City. It’s clear the Chiefs think highly of his abilities, but they’ll need him to play a bit smarter than he did in this preseason matchup.

In general, it hasn’t been a great night for players wearing the No. 40. Wade’s offensive counterpart, John Lovett, left the game with a shoulder injury.
