Chiefs bring in former Kansas LB Joe Dineen Jr. for a tryout

The Kansas City Chiefs brought a player in for a workout that went to college right down I-70 at the University of Kansas.

On Monday’s official transaction report, the Chiefs reported a workout for LB Joe Dineen Jr., who spent the entire offseason with the Chiefs’ AFC West rival Denver Broncos. He signed with them following the 2019 NFL draft as an undrafted free agent.

Dineen had a strong start to the preseason with 10 tackles in two contests. It came to an end when Dineen broke the fourth metacarpal in his right hand (ring finger) during the second preseason game. He was ultimately waived with an injury designation during roster cuts and reverted to the injured reserve list as a result. Early in September, the Broncos waived Dineen with an injury settlement.

The Chiefs have some familiarity with this player. They had a private workout with Dineen ahead of the draft and had him in for their local pro day. Dineen was known as a strong run defender during college, leading the nation in run stops from 2017-2018. The Chiefs could certainly use a boost to their run defense from the linebacker position.

This will obviously bring on some speculation about the status of Reggie Ragland, who went from starter to a healthy scratch through the first two weeks of the season. Ragland saw his first action of the season on Sunday, so I wouldn’t read into it too much. It’s good to keep tabs on a player like Dineen in the event of injury or trade. Even if the Chiefs are simply getting a look at him in order to put him on their call list, it’s worth bringing him in for a workout.
