Chiefs agree to terms with free-agent offensive lineman Mike Remmers to help protect Patrick Mahomes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ Two days after losing a veteran offensive lineman to free agency, the Chiefs are gaining one via free agency.

Mike Remmers, who's played for seven teams as a pro, has agreed to a one-year contract with the Chiefs, his agent, Brett Tessler, announced on Twitter Saturday. Tessler tweeted that the deal is "mostly guaranteed" but did not disclose financial details.

The 6-foot-5, 308-pound Remmers has played nine seasons in the NFL after entering the league in 2012 out of Oregon State as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos. He has also spent time with the Buccaneers, Chargers, Vikings, Rams, Panthers and Giants.

He has appeared in 79 games with 78 starts, including 14 with the Giants in 2019. Remmers, who turns 31 on April 11, provides flexibility, as he can play both tackle and guard.

The signing of Remmers fills a need on the Chiefs' offensive line following the departure of guard Stefen Wisniewski, who signed a two-year deal with the Steelers. Wisniewski, who played with the Chiefs as they advanced to and won Super Bowl LIV in early February, tweeted Thursday that he was going "home" to Pittsburgh. He's a Pennsylvania native.

Remmers, who will join the corps of Kansas City players tasked with protecting star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, becomes the second free-agent signing for the Chiefs this offseason. Cornerback Antonio Hamilton, signed late in the week, was the first.

The Chiefs have lost Wisniewski, cornerback Kendall Fuller and defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah since free agency started Wednesday. Fuller signed with Washington, while Ogbah joined the Dolphins.
