Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan in hospital for non Covid-19 related tests

Ireland's top doctor is in hospital undergoing tests not related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has been leading Ireland's charge against the deadly virus.

Dr Holohan said he is in good spirits and expects to be back to work tomorrow.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Ronan Glynn will take over in his absence.

Dr Tony expects to be discharged on Thursday morning and be back to work after that.

It comes as he announced last night that there was 325 new confirmed cases of Covid-19, bringing the total here to 3,235.

Sadly, there have now been 71 deaths related to the virus in the Republic.

Speaking at a briefing last night, he said: “The measures that we have recommended today should significantly enhance the preparedness and response to cases and outbreaks in nursing homes and other residential settings.

“As we have said from the beginning our efforts must be focused on protecting the most vulnerable to Covid-19 and these recommendations announced today seek to achieve this."

The Irish Mirror understands that Mr Holohan's Deputy Ronan Glynn will temporarily step into the role.

Mr Holohan is said to be in good spirits and is expected to return to work on Thursday.
