Chidobe Awuzie impressing Bengals coaches at training camp

The Cincinnati Bengals like what they see from their starting cornerbacks so far this summer.

Trae Waynes, flanked by new arrivals Chidobe Awuzie and Mike Hilton, will all make their debuts with the team on the field in Week 1.

And it’s Awuzie who has the eye of defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, per Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:

“Go out there and be the same guy every day. Be consistent. We don’t have the big ups and downs. I think we’ve got two guys that can do that with Cheeto who I think has had an outstanding camp. That was Antonio Brown running down the sideline, one of the more dangerous guys that you’ll face. And he handled that well. I’m pleased with both of them and I think Trae will be right in line with what we had from a scheme standpoint last year. “

Despite how brief the appearance was for the starters against Tampa Bay, it was an affirmation of what the corners have shown in camp when running against new competition.

On paper, Awuzie and Waynes can function as quality starters on the outside while Hilton handles a range of responsibilities, including some crafty blitzing.

With their first dose of that in live action on the books, Bengals coaches are encouraged with how things are going — which is a pretty good sign given how well the pass-rush played, too.
